Dr. Ruth, Author of Roller Coaster Grandma, to Headline Jewish Comic Con

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, author of the new graphic novel Roller Coaster Grandma: The Amazing Story of Dr. Ruth, will be the featured guest at the 2018 Jewish Comic Con, Sunday, April 29 in Brooklyn.

Billed as "a love letter to the creators of the comic book medium and their heroes," Jewish Comic Con is an event for all ages that explores how Jewish identity has influenced comics, both on the page and behind the scenes.

Dr. Ruth will talk about and sign copies of Roller Coaster Grandma, her new book from Apples & Honey Press. Set in a graphic novel format for ages 8-12, it recounts her escape from the Nazis at age 10 aboard a Kindertransport, to training as a sniper with the Hagganah in Israel, through her immigration to the U.S. where she started as a maid, became a college professor, and eventually a television star. Using a trip to an amusement park with her grandchildren as its framework, the story subtly demonstrates lessons of grit, resilience, and strength that readers can apply to their own lives.

At age 89, Dr. Ruth is energetic and eager to reach young people with her message of resilience and reinvention. “I’ve written 40 books but I never thought I’d be the author of what looks to me like a giant comic book!” she said of the book that was co-written by her long-time collaborator Pierre Lehu, and illustrated by graphic artist Mark Simmons.
